Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Maternal health remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with maternal mortality rates among the highest globally. Toro LGA in Bauchi State faces challenges such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, low literacy levels, and cultural barriers that hinder access to maternal health services. Public relations (PR) strategies play a vital role in increasing awareness and addressing misconceptions surrounding maternal health. By employing targeted campaigns, community engagement, and stakeholder collaboration, PR initiatives can promote the adoption of antenatal care, safe delivery practices, and postnatal health services. Current research emphasizes the importance of PR in bridging the gap between healthcare providers and underserved communities (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve maternal health services, many women in Toro LGA lack adequate knowledge about available programs. Cultural resistance, misinformation, and communication gaps exacerbate the issue, resulting in low participation in maternal health initiatives. This study examines how PR strategies can effectively address these challenges and increase awareness in the region.
